The Sisters Sangre is a hand-drawn animated horror comedy created by Stephanie Ramón. This independent series follows Prunella and Cyril Sangre as they learn how to make a living as body brokers. While it may seem like the harsh realities of Whitechapel (East London’s most dangerous neighborhood) would be their biggest threat, it’s the sister’s sibling rivalry that risks sabotaging their efforts.

Blending humor, history and horror, each episode uncovers new layers of a richly imagined universe, with bizarre characters and thoroughly gloomy environments. Think What We Do in the Shadows meets Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? with a touch of Rick and Morty.

Trust me, you’ll love it.

Synopsis

The Sisters Sangre follows thirty-somethings CYRIL and PRUNELLA SANGRE, as they navigate the dangerous streets of Victorian era London, England. Having fallen on hard times and with limited job prospects-at least ones that don’t involve sex work, leeches or succumbing to phossy jaw at a matchstick factory, the sisters have turned to the illicit trade of grave robbing. By exhuming fresh corpses and selling them to medical schools on the down low, they stand to make a fortune! They just have to get past the moral ambiguity, ruthless competition and disgusting gooey fluids that come with the job. Good God there’s so much goo.

Despite the penalty of death if caught grave robbing, both sisters are determined to see their new business venture through and make a better life for themselves, and pet pig ELIZA. A life that doesn’t involve the risk of contracting cholera every time they use the privy or begging PERCIVAL FAIRWEATHER for extra shifts at his Oblong Cummerbund Factory where workers are routinely sucked into the heavy machinery. Sigh. A girl can dream. But Victorian society doesn’t look kindly upon women entrepreneurs.

Because of this, Cyril and Prunella face an uphill battle. Sure, they’ve got an employee on the payroll, but ALFIE is an anaemic orphan that can barely lift a shovel. If they’re not busy playing cat and mouse with SPRING HEELED JACK, a terrifying figure who hunts women down and blows blue flames in their faces, then they’re being extorted by ladies of the night like FRENCHY, LIZZY and FANNY O’DUFF to stay mum or navigating labyrinthian sewer systems while avoiding THE ORPHANS, to get to their quarry before their rivals BURKE & HARE do. To overcome these challenges and all manner of danger that characterises 1800s London, they’ll have to rely on one another. And that’s where the real conflict comes into play.

As total opposites, the sisters often clash. Sober minded Prunella often loses patience with moony Cyril’s dilly dallying Despite their difference in personality, these ladies possess the same two qualities that always brings them together; sisterhood and shared animosity. It’s their familial bond and mutual hate of having to lick orange things found in the trash bin to stave off scurvy, prying open smelly coffins in search of “fresh” merchandise or contending with bastard sweatshop owners that gives them the muck to work together!

The World

Set in the Whitechapel neighborhood of East London, The Sisters Sangre is saturated in atmosphere. From foggy cobblestone streets lit by gas lamps, to the damp and uncomfortable lodgings of flophouses, to the lush green surroundings of a silent graveyard and the plush extravagance of a crooked businessman’s study, the viewer is invited to kick up their feet and indulge in the show’s dark ambiance. Without having to worry about stepping on a dead rat!

The Victorian era was ludicrous as it was filthy and dangerous. By satirizing a time where great cultural and technological changes were taking place, The Sisters Sangre draws similarities between the absurdities of today and the 19th Century. Fast-paced technological change, housing insecurity, child labor and crazy industrialists come to mind. Even measles! All this seen through the lens of two underdogs trying to navigate a difficult time period, you’ll appreciate their wry wit and sardonic take on normally depressing situations.

Prunella Sangre

Elder Sister (Mid 30’s)

Ambitious Prunella came to London to study medicine, but had to do so disguised as a man. After an embarrassing urinal mishap, she was discovered and thrown in Bedlam Insane Asylum for “hysterical trouser wearing”. She snuck out, more determined than ever to make it in the big city. She found cheap shelter in a pig shed and odd jobs like leech picking and poop scavenging before landing factory work. As the pragmatic big sister, Cyril finds her a little too serious and overbearing at times.

Cyril Sangre

Younger Sister (Early 30’s)

The younger sister, Cyril is carefree and outgoing. She only recently relocated to the city, and is still adjusting to the dank slums of East London. Her life before was picturesque, living on a country estate with her then-fiancé until their romance was cut short by a tragic accident. Now single and penniless, with only her beloved’s hand preserved in a jar, she has to postpone her dream of one day creating her own dog breed to dig up dead bodies. She looks up to her big sister, who can find her naivety tiring.

They throw a dress over the man’s body and go to work. The sisters claim the corpse is a new worker, and tie his arm to a lever and take turns pulling a rope. It works, until its leg gets ripped off. This gets everyone’s attention, but instead of the truth coming to light, Percy makes the corpse employee of the month for soldiering on. The shift ends and the sisters rush to the school. They make the exchange, but for less since it’s missing a limb.

Once underground, they make their way through the dank tunnels, navigating disgusting obstacles. All at once they are surrounded by pale, sickly children. It’s The Orphans! Grateful, the sisters offer him an apprenticeship, which he eagerly accepts.

Both the Trollops and Alfie each offer to share their own places, but neither work out, for very different reasons. Finally, exhausted and demoralized, the sisters head to the graveyard to collapse in a hole. It’s there they discover a necropolis hidden under ivy, forgotten by time and graveyard staff. They have finally found a home!

  • Episode 6: Mess of the d'Urbervilles

The sisters encounter a supernatural foe. Late one night, Cyril, Prunella and Eliza are attacked by a crazed entity. It slashes at them with long claws and shoots blue flames. They narrowly escape, losing the body they were transporting. The next day, they are at the factory where everyone is talking about sightings of Spring Heeled Jack, the sisters realize this is the psycho from last night. Percy declares he will capture the beast. That evening, the sisters are travelling by tunnel, when they come across a commotion aboveground-Percy and his hunting party dressed in drag (to lure the pervert) are battling Spring Heeled Jack! Their boss spots them and demands they help. They oblige, but Prunella discreetly sabotages things, since Jack knows what they’re up to and she can’t risk him telling on them once captured. He gets away, much to Percy’s disappointment. A few nights later the sisters find a body on their doorstep, wrapped like a gift with a letter of “thanks”. They have made an unconventional ally.
